Responsible Gambling

This page explains how MB Info thinks about responsible-gambling messaging, what UK problem-gambling support is available, and how to recognise when your relationship with gambling is becoming unhealthy.

The 18+ requirement

Every page on MB Info that discusses welcome offers, free bets or loyalty schemes is aimed at UK adults aged 18 and over. UKGC licensing is contingent on operators applying strict age verification at account opening, and the CAP Code requires that gambling advertising is not targeted at anyone under 18. If you are under 18, none of the offers discussed on this site are available to you and the correct response is to close the page.

UKGC licensing and consumer protection

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is the statutory regulator for commercial gambling in Great Britain. Every operator named on this site holds a current UKGC operating licence. UKGC licence conditions include the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP), the social responsibility code, and the technical standards for online games. Operators are required to check the GAMSTOP national self-exclusion register at account opening; if you are registered with GAMSTOP, your account application is blocked automatically at any UKGC-licensed operator.

Signs your gambling may be becoming unhealthy

The signals worth taking seriously are not always dramatic. They include: betting more than you originally planned in a single session; chasing losses with larger stakes; using gambling as a way to escape stress, low mood or difficult feelings; feeling irritable when unable to bet; hiding the extent of your betting from family or friends; and using money set aside for essentials (rent, bills, food) to fund betting.

None of these signals are a diagnosis. All of them are worth pausing on. The healthiest response is to talk to someone - a family member, a friend, or a professional support service.

UK problem-gambling support - text mentions

Support in the UK is available through several dedicated organisations. GamCare operates the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, with 24/7 confidential advice for anyone affected by gambling. GordonMoody offers residential treatment and structured recovery programmes for people with severe gambling addiction. The NHS National Gambling Clinic provides specialist NHS support, with clinics in London, Leeds, Manchester and elsewhere. BeGambleAware funds treatment and provides information, self-assessment tools and directories of support. GAM-Anon offers a peer-support programme specifically for family members and others affected by another person's gambling.

These organisations are named here as text mentions. Please look each one up directly - independent contact from you carries more weight than a click-through from a review site.

GAMSTOP - the national self-exclusion scheme

GAMSTOP is the UK's national online self-exclusion scheme. Registration is free. Once registered, all UKGC-licensed online operators are required to prevent you from opening an account or logging in to an existing account for the period you have selected - six months, one year or five years. GAMSTOP has been a UKGC licence condition since 31 March 2020. If your gambling has become a concern, GAMSTOP is one of the most effective single steps available.

Deposit limits and reality checks

Every UKGC-licensed operator provides in-account responsible-gambling tools. The two most useful are the deposit limit (a hard cap on how much you can deposit per day, week or month) and the reality check (a periodic pop-up during play summarising time spent and money staked). Both are opt-in but take minutes to activate. If you have not set a deposit limit, doing so before the next session is a low-effort, high-value step.

Time-outs and cool-offs

Between GAMSTOP (long-term exclusion) and no action at all, most operators offer short-term "time-out" or "cool-off" periods - 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days - during which your account is locked. These are useful for taking a break without committing to a longer exclusion.

Financial protection - Gamban and card blocks

Beyond operator-level tools, third-party services can help. Gamban is a subscription blocking service that prevents gambling sites and apps from opening on your device. Many UK banks (Monzo, Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest) offer app-based gambling-transaction blocks, applied at the card level; enabling the block prevents your card from being used at any gambling merchant. Enabling both a Gamban-style device block and a card-level block covers the two most common access routes.

Debt and financial support

If gambling has led to serious financial difficulty, non-gambling-specific debt-advice services can help - StepChange, Citizens Advice, National Debtline. These services are free, confidential, and independent of the gambling industry. Talking to a debt adviser early, before the position deteriorates, materially improves the range of options available.

Language MB Info does not use

MB Info does not use language that frames gambling as "free money", presents winnings as guaranteed, or minimises the risk of loss. We do not use urgency-inducing language ("claim now before the offer expires") in editorial copy. We do not encourage chasing losses. We do not suggest that any operator's offer is "risk-free" - no bet is risk-free.

What to do if you are worried about someone else

If you are worried about a family member's or friend's gambling, GAM-Anon runs a peer-support programme specifically for people affected by someone else's gambling. GamCare's helpline (0808 8020 133) can advise on how to open a conversation without escalating it, and on the practical steps (financial, emotional, legal) that may follow.

Editorial position

MB Info exists because welcome-offer marketing is loud, complicated and often unclear. Our editorial position is that adults are entitled to accurate information about the products they buy and the promotions they take up. That is what we try to provide - and we combine it with the responsible-gambling language above because no consumer information about betting is complete without it.

18+ - please gamble responsibly. All welcome offers discussed in this article are UKGC-licensed. T&Cs apply. If gambling stops being fun, help is available - GamCare (0808 8020 133), GordonMoody, NHS National Gambling Clinic, BeGambleAware, GAM-Anon. Never bet money you cannot afford to lose.

More on our editorial approach

The reason this responsible-gambling page runs to over a thousand words is that betting content without a serious responsible-gambling frame is content that has failed the reader. UKGC advertising rules require the 18+ marker, the T&Cs-apply language, and the responsible-gambling messaging on any commercial affiliate content. Beyond the rules, honest editorial requires more - the plain acknowledgement that any promotion which increases the amount of betting a reader does is not entirely on the reader's side, and that responsible-gambling support is a real resource, not a compliance box to tick.

MB Info commits to the following practices. We do not use urgency-driven language in editorial copy. We do not describe any offer as risk-free. We do not treat wins as guaranteed. We do not suggest chasing losses. Every article ends with responsible-gambling language and links back to this page. If we ever fail against these practices, please raise it via the Contact page and we will correct the article.
